This is the fifth book in the Owen Archer series and I find myself liking each book more and more. The author has done a masterful job of researching the late 1300's and incorporating some of the real characters of that time period. There actually was a St. Leonard's in York at that time as well as Sir Richard de Ravenser and Archbishop Thoresby. The descriptions of the people, the area and the deadly plague that changed so many lives during the late 1300's is all very accurate, in fact, so vividly described that you can see and smell the filth and the death that happened. York, like so many other cities of that time, were neither beautiful, clean nor healthy places to live but it is such an interesting time, especially if you are a history buff. Anything medical was absolutely primitive with nothing more than herbs and what today would be called homeopathic ointments which were used to treat everything from stab wounds to the plague. How anybody survived is beyond me! Anyway, this is a fascinating, realistic and vivid read and I highly recommend it!
