Absolutely love this dual sided book display and storage solution! It is sturdy and exactly what I was looking for! I love ECR4KIDS products and have the junior little me climb and slide for those beginning gross motor functions. This purchase has made me feel confident in purchasing more of their wooden line!I was on the fence on ordering it due to the reviews mentioning trouble with assembly but it was the exact solution I was looking for that allowed for toy storage and book storage with the ability to hid the toys if needed while still offering the ability for easy access for a toddler (note: the photos are right after assembling and I just tossed the few toys I had near into it. Definitely not set up Montessori style within photos but it fits almost the whole melissa and doug 40 piece cardboard big boxes on one shelf for an idea of the amount of storage a shelf offered if needing to hide toys for company coming over!) Did I run into the "holes not lining up issue"? Yes. In the next paragraphs I am going to address that assembly issue and how to overcome it with my troubleshooting it so you can avoid this issue and feel confident with this purchase. The assembly was very easy until the last two pieces. The bottom piece with the ECR4kids logo on it uses the regular screws provided and it does not have predrilled holes for those in the units bottom piece. To help with this, simply but the allen screw into that piece following the directions to secure it, using the regular screws (not allen!) and screwdriver, do a few turns to just get a little hole to mark the area on the piece of wood you will want to pre drill the ECR4kids logo piece sits on top of. I could not find a pencil or pen that could reach and this was my method. Then unscrew the Allen screw and take that piece off. Using a drill, drill in just a little to give something for your screw to hold on to. Then reattach that logo front piece and screw in the allen screw to hold it.The piece where holes are hard to line up is the last piece you will add, A2. This one of the flat sides of the unit. The best way to avoid the hole issue is to turn the unit on it's side so the A1 side is on the floor. Place A2 into place, there are little wooden bits that will pop into the A2 side in predrilled holes. From there, screw in the allen screws but not fully/tight tight along the book display shelves starting with the middle and then working to the next one up and down the unit, leaving the top and bottom one not in just yet. Then screw the middle of the unit screw and the middle outside one (closest to the storage side). Then screw in the top and bottom. What I noticed in trying different orders were the book display holes were the ones having issues with lining up over any of the others. This is due to the construction and how the display is almost accordion-ish, meaning the most flexible. So if the top and bottom are done first, it cannot move. Screwing in the book display to A1 first from middle out allows for those pieces to be secured and lines every other hole easily!Hope this helps with assembly and helps if you are on the fence due to those reviews. It isn't the product being dysfunctional or badly made, but directions not really taking items into consideration and communicating the order needed to avoid this issue.A good solid hardwood bookcase, with no MDF/particle board, which was the main reason I bought it. I was looking for a front-facing bookcase and liked that this one has storage in the back. The first one I received had damage to several of the pieces. There is a note inside which asks you not to return it to the place of purchase, but instead to call the manufacturer. I had started putting it together at night after Baby was asleep, so obviously the manufacturer's offices were closed. I sent them an email and kept putting it together, thinking they would send me replacement parts. They instead told me to return it to Amazon. So I had to get Amazon to send me a new one before I could return the old one because the packaging was literally falling apart when it arrived, so I needed a new box. When the new one arrived, that packaging was also nearly falling apart and had a big hole in the side. I patched it up the best I could with packing tape. The new product had a few pieces that were also damaged, but between the old one and new one, I managed to get enough working pieces to make one bookcase. The instructions are not very well-written, and there were several times that I put a piece on backwards and only realized it several steps later, which meant I had to undo a lot of my work. It took me about 2.5 hours to put this together. There are about a million of those allen/hex screws that you are supposed to screw in using the tiny wrench provided. My hands were aching by the end and I could not tighten several of the screws. I waited a few days until the handyman came to do some repairs and asked him for help. Even he could not tighten all of them using the tiny wrench and instead had to use a drill with the special allen drill bits. If I had that at the beginning, it would have taken me less than half the time to assemble it. I am happy with the assembled final result - it is a great sturdy bookcase which seems like it will last a long time. I deducted one star for the hassle of having to return it and use pieces from two separate bookcases to get enough pieces to make one bookcase, and I deducted another star for the poorly-written instructions and the difficulty of assembling without power tools. The bookshelf of my dreams. Love the out of sight storage on the back. We have it in my sons bedroom and it has just enough space in top for a little lamp, sound machine and fan.We bought this shelf for our preschool classroom. It arrived quickly and undamaged. It has been a nightmare to put together. The holes do not all line up, making it difficult to put together and the hardware is TERRIBLE! Using the Allen wrench, they provided, and it slips and the screws strip extremely easily. Tried to use a name brand Allen wrench to prevent this and to hardware is so cheap and weak that it strips out. We are going to have to go buy all new hardware in order to put this shelf together completely. It is nice sturdy wood and not cheap particle board but for the cost of the shelf there is no reason they cannot provide better hardware.Ordered this for my children's playroom. It's very sturdy and provides great storage in the back. My kids are able to get to the books easily. We love it!This unit goes together easily and is very sturdy. The instructions are easy to follow and all parts and pieces are included. We Love it for our public and elementary school needs. Yes, I would purchase this again.I have wanted this book/display shelf for years and finally decided to get it. It had a lot of pieces but it wasn't that bad to put together. The instructions could have been a little more clear in the first few steps. The finished product was more than I could have hoped for. It is beautiful and so perfect!! The children in my family child care home love it. It is very durable and the perfect size for the toddler/preschool age children in my care. The design is 100% perfect for my needs.Unfortunately, the day mine was made their must have been monkeys working in the manufacturing plant. Misaligned holes, warped boards that wouldn't fit into their dado's, splitting boards, lack of pre-drilled holes...etc. At this point I haven't even been able to complete assembly because of the above mentioned issues. My husband will give it a try later, but this may be a return. For that much money I was hoping for better. I do see other reviews that say that assembly was easy so I'm really hoping this was just a statistical outlier.LOVE LOVE LOVE the design.EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED in the manufacturing.Very good product. Easy to put together. Sturdy despite kids climbing on it sometimes.Very sturdy and functional. Took a bit of time to assemble, but looks great in my classroom.
